How Warframe damage actually works

Base damage, elements, multishot and critical layers — the order they resolve in, and why mod position changes your damage type.

Warframe’s damage formula is not complicated, but it is layered, and the layers do not all behave the same way. Most build confusion comes from treating every percentage on a mod card as though it were the same kind of percentage. It is not.

Here is what the layers are, and what each one does to the number.

Layer 1 — base damage

Every weapon has a base damage value split across three physical types: Impact, Puncture and Slash. The split is part of the weapon’s identity — a shotgun leans Impact, a blade leans Slash — and it matters because those three types behave differently against different enemy defences.

Layer 2 — base damage mods

Serration, Hornet Strike, Pressure Point and their relatives increase base damage.

The critical property: these are additive with each other, then multiply the base once. Two mods at +100% and +50% do not multiply into 3×. They sum to +150%, and your base becomes 2.5×.

This is why the second base-damage mod is always worth dramatically less than the first, and why stacking them past a point stops being the answer.

Layer 3 — elemental mods

There are four base elements: Heat, Cold, Electricity and Toxin.

An elemental mod does not convert your damage. It adds a new damage type, calculated as a percentage of your base damage, on top of what you already have. A weapon with 100 base damage and a +90% Heat mod deals its original 100 plus 90 Heat.

Elemental mods are additive with each other within the same element, exactly like base damage mods. Two Heat mods sum before applying.

Combining elements

Two different base elements on the same weapon combine into a single secondary element:

The combined element carries the summed damage of both contributing mods. You do not lose anything by combining — you trade two base elements for one secondary one.

The part that surprises people

Which elements combine depends on the order your mods sit in.

The game reads your mods in slot order — left to right, top row then bottom row — and pairs them up as it goes. Put Heat before Cold before Electricity and you get Blast plus a leftover Electricity. Reorder them and you get something else entirely.

This is a real mechanic, not a quirk, and it is the reason build screenshots show mods in a specific arrangement. If you copy a build’s mods but not its layout, you can end up with a different damage type than the build intended. When a build “does not feel right” despite having every correct mod, check the order first.

To force a specific pairing, place the two elements you want combined adjacent in reading order, ahead of any third element.

Layer 4 — multishot

Multishot mods fire additional projectiles without additional ammo cost. Functionally this multiplies your damage output, and because it multiplies rather than adds, it is usually among the strongest mods available to a weapon.

It also multiplies your status output, since each projectile rolls independently. Multishot is therefore doing two jobs at once, which is why it survives the cut in nearly every build.

Layer 5 — critical hits

Two stats: critical chance, how often, and critical damage, how much.

Warframe lets critical chance exceed 100%. Above 100%, every shot crits and some crit at a higher tier — orange crits above 100%, red crits above 200%. This is why critical chance stays valuable past the point where it looks saturated, and why crit-focused builds tend to commit fully rather than sit halfway.

Layer 6 — status

Status chance determines how often a hit applies a proc — the status effect attached to your damage type. Slash procs bleed. Viral amplifies damage taken. Corrosive strips armour.

Two builds with identical damage numbers can perform completely differently based on which procs they apply, because procs interact with enemy defences rather than raw health. Against heavily armoured targets, the status your weapon applies frequently matters more than the damage on the card.

Layer 7 — faction damage

Faction mods multiply separately from everything above. They are their own bucket, applied at the end.

This is why they punch above their listed number — a +30% faction mod is genuinely +30% to the final figure, not +30% added into a pool that is already at +200%. It is also why they are worth a slot on a weapon you use for one specific enemy type.

The order, in one place

  1. Base damage, split across Impact / Puncture / Slash
  2. Base damage mods — summed, then applied once
  3. Elemental mods — summed per element, added as new damage, combined by slot order
  4. Multishot — multiplies output
  5. Critical layer — chance and damage
  6. Status — procs, applied on top
  7. Faction damage — its own multiplier, last

What to take from this

The two mods that most often deserve a slot are the ones that multiply rather than add: multishot, and whatever critical mod your weapon’s base stats can actually use.
